Writing Dyslexia

June 1, 2010 by Nicole 6 Comments

Do you get this when tired? I do. I go from being a competent typist with good speed to someone who gets all the right letters in all the wrong places.

Is very irritating.

Sometimes the Word programme is super smart and puts it correct other times it just gives me an that annoying red line.. I also find I repeat descriptions when tired without noticing till I glance over what I’ve written. I seem to forget it as soon as I type it and then I use it again feeling pleased that it sounds so good. That’s when I click, I wrote it only two lines before.

I know I get it bad with numbers when tired (there is a reason why I’m a receptionist at a finance company and not an advisor *grin*), then I see the number backwards. It used to be funny when I worked in the deli (college job – years ago) and I’d read the price backwards and freak the poor customer out ( $1.02 becomes $20.01 – rather a difference). I spoke to a woman once who was fascinated as apparently this is a trait a lot of stroke victims have, but I had a head scan a few years ago that showed nothing unusual so I’m sure I’m fine in that sense *grin*

And I don’t do funny things like put the remote in the freezer – not naming any names ;p (GLENN!) – cause that really seems to be an absent minded male thing to do . You know, wander when you’re holding something and then you can’t figure out where it’s gone *grin* Though I have done the embarrassing ‘Agh! Where’s my glasses??’ thing when I was wearing them.. hehe *opps*

The other funny thing I do when tired and thinking on my writing is I completely forget what my line is when I answer the phone. It’s not good! I have a long minute where I’m running through all the intro’s I’ve had to learn over the years and it takes forever to get to the right one. All this while a customer waits patiently. I’ve also done it while recalling the dogs, completely forgetting their names and yelling every name under the sun cept theirs *giggle* thankfully they’ll come back to practically anything – it’s how you say it, not what.

So what’s your funny quirk when you’re knackered and your brain is stuck on writing (or whatever you’re working on), what’s your automated response?

Hey Nicole 🙂 Love your blog title.. It made me laugh out aloud.

When my brain is fried, the best I can do is go to sleep. I cannot type a single word … what a writer – eh?

well truth be told at a really bad moment, you know the one i;m talking about, when you are alone with your loved one, being nice and cosy and reaching THAT moment….the name that popped into my head was my WIP's hero and not my husband. Thank goodness i realised before i called it out loud!! Darn scenes 😉

    Ms. Macdonald,

What's your novel? I love fantisy. Robert Jorden is my no-1 read… Also, the Eskan trilogy.

    Hello SH

If you're interested then check out my synopsis page – it goes into more detail. So far my fav authors are David Eddings, Anne McCaffrey & Tamora Pierce 🙂 but lots more to be read, my partner has a pretty big fantasy/sci-fi collection.

Erskan trilogy is a good one. Each book is 200 pages, but well written.
