Full stops and speech marks – the debacle!

June 9, 2010 by Nicole 6 Comments

The big discussion on the cards at the moment is speech marks and full stops. How do they work together? Have a read on the following sites if you’re interested and I’d really love to hear your opinions.

At the moment I’m going with the ‘British English’ theory of outside the speech marks. I like this because I think the full stop should be at the end – if it’s inside the speech marks then it’s not ‘finished’ but that’s just my opinion.

So what’s your theory? Can you make me change my mind *grin*

The site below is amusing as they have the references backwards according to the other sites *grin*

Hmm interesting! I see where they are coming from but based on what i was taught as school – the US english way even though we are in NZ it just looks wrong the British English way.
    But okay!

Honestly, I don't know what NZ and AUS use, but I suppose it depends on where you're submitting. So if US, then use that style.

Good luck! And thanks for stopping by my blog so that I could find yours! :o)

Hey nicole here is my email address…. fill in the blanks in the first name (my nickname)(just avoiding it online in case a blasted email stealing worm eats it)

    p_x_eleigh72@yahoo.com.au

Send the manuscript away. I'm editing Kerrin's at the moment (should probably tell her that…) Am grinning at the descriptions of her hero…i love sexy smooth muscles…hmmmmmm… Anyway i digress.

I'll let you know how i go. I think what i will do with Kerrin's is edit/critique 2-3 chapters and then send it on??? that way you know that i am paying attention 🙂 lol:-)

i can do that for you too. What kind of feedback are you looking for? I have started Kerrin's without asking her and feel a bit bad as i like to write comments on all paragraphs. (Ex English teacher what can i say)Rather than just saying what i think at the end.

    anyway let me know

    HUGS
    Sarah
