Inspirational movies or shows

July 22, 2010 by Nicole 10 Comments

I’ve mentioned how music takes me to my creative spot and then I was thinking about TV. What does it for you? Are there any shows that you ‘have’ to watch when you’re doing a particular activity?

For me I have to watch Project Runway when I’m sewing. I love it! It gets me in the creative sewing buzz and I’ve got a team of others right in front of me doing the same thing ; ) Feels vey exciting *grin*. If I’m trying to think of designs I like to watch Marie Antoinette or The Devil wears Prada (not a fan of the book though..). I’m pretty sure Sex in the City 2 will be added to this list once I get round to watching it.

When we eat dinner we really enjoy watching Top Chef or another cooking show with it. Sure it makes our food look somewhat boring ;p but it feels appropriate to be eating when watching it *lol*. I also find that when I watch Chocolate I want to eat yummy chocolate..mmmmm..

For my writing it depends on what I’m working on. With the new re-write I’m finding Buffy is really helpful. It’s got the snappy dialogue I’m looking for (no I’m not copying it, it just triggers thoughts/ideas) and the close friendships. It also has the arse-kicking girl whom as I’ve mentioned I adore.

For helping with the scenery descriptions I like LOR but I think I should try Avatar as well… hmmm.. Though the floating mountains annoy me to no end. Ugh and ‘unobtainium’??!! I’m sure it was meant to be funny..

I’m just a little frustrated at the lack of really good ‘monster’ movies. I had such high hopes for Percy Jackson but it fizzled. And Clash of the Titans was almost pointless to watch, I found his Aussie accent sooo distracting ; p

At the moment I’ll stick to Buffy, the monster might be cheesy but the theme feels right *grin* And when I eventually get my Sailor Moon set back from Loi I’ll use that for the romance scenes, I just wish I had a copy of the Japanese version with English subs. I’m told it’s HEAPS better than the DIC dub.

So do you watch anything for inspiration? Can you write and watch at the same time? Do you have any recommendations for me *grin* Dezzy?? You reading this? ; p Actually I’m looking forward to the Rapunzel re-make ‘Tangled’. I saw the trailer on Dezzy’s site Hollywood Spy and it looks awesome! Going to have to plan a girls trip to that one.

When I get to control the remote, I either turn on HGTV or toss in a chick flick. Lately it seems every time I watch HGTV its a show based on buying/selling a house. It's not that I don't like these shows, but I prefer the ones where they DO something like show you how to retile your floor or teach you how to make something out of nothing. sigh. These days though, I probably turn the TV Off so I can write.

LOST really helped me with plot and character development. The Bachelorette helps me with the romance side of things.

LOTR definitely helps with description and overall inspiration.

    Great question!

Hmmm, anything astrophysical on the science channel I perk my ears up for. Through The Worm Hole is a new one that has sparked my interest. This is just an entertainment kind of thing thought.

As to inspirational, I am thinking of putting together a book on the benefits of a wife led marriage. Not fiction. This is why I am hanging around a couple of writing blogs. For that I draw from current events. Specifically, trends that place women in positions of leadership and allow the relationship dynamic to be more accepted. A few decades ago, a wife at home and subservient was accepted. Now a days, a husband at home is accepted, but not quite the subservient part. I enjoy to see things in the news that allow this to be a more acceptable form of relationship as I see it has so many benefits.

There's this TV show about a vigilante called Dexter that, coupled with the manga series Death Note, has really inspired the criminal justice side of my novel. And there are more movies than I can list that have inspired me! I watch mainly dramas and quirky comedies so I write a lot of that. I do love The Devil Wears Prada, though. :]

@ Vicki – yeah I miss those how-to shows as well. And the makeover shows seem to zoom over the finished product when I'd like a nice slow tour 🙂
@ Aubrie – hmmm I dunno Lost looks really confusing. And when will I see your e-book 🙂 ?? Hanging out here *grin*
@SH – we watch everything online so I'd have to have a hunt for a doco. And a book like that would be fascinating. You'd have to approach it in a certain light though, so that it could appeal to more.. otherwise it'd just get put away as a reference book.. Tricky but fun!
    @ Janet – totally understand that 🙂 that's why i find runs/walks so useful when I'm stuck.
@ Sharon – Ooooh really?? So zooming over, thanks!
@ Amanda – Glenn really likes Dexter too and he's pretty picky so it must be a good show, maybe I should check it out when I eventually start work on my black comedy. Once I finish BirthRight books 1 & 2..that's all..;p

I love the new show Moonlight on the CW…If I wrote fantasy that would be a must watch show. I adore cooking shows, oddly enough I don't really like cooking. I just love the creativity involved in the chef's creations….

Friday Night Lights has inspired how I show character emotions. The actors on the show, especially Kyle Chandler, are *the* masters of non-verbal acting. His character, Coach Taylor, can say more with one look that most can with a whole soliloquy.
