As previously mentioned I’m a Leo and I believe in lots of things apparently sane people scoff at *grin* But that’s never stopped me (and I’ve never claimed to be sane anyway). Which brings me to today’s topic. Names.
How do you pick them for your character? Is it by meaning or sound? Do you like your own name and its meaning? How do you create names if you need unique ones?
BirthRight, the trilogy (*hee*) I’m working on is set on another planet so I’ve tried to avoid normal ‘Earth’ sounding names. I only have one or two. But man was it an insane amount of work to get all those names. I have pages and pages of scribbles as I tried it make it something real sounding. Some names I had fun with like the character Nnelg a little blue fire dragon. He’s a cheeky wee thing with a decent amount of sarcasm thrown in. Nnelg is Glenn reversed *giggle*. Ageip is a griffon pup and is my niece’s name rearranged (Paige) and my nephew has a dessert named after him – the Merrej Dessert (cool place with creepy things like giant scorpions *shudder*) which is his name reversed – Jerrem.
My own name sneaks in there with a different version of spelling – Nikol. Okay so maybe a little tacky but I wanted my name in there somewhere ;p I’m very proud of it. Nicole is derived from Nike – the greek goddess of Victory. Appropriate no? *grin*. Actually most my family and friends appear in there – in name only but it was fun to include them. And this way when it’s on the top 10 bestsellers of all time list they can skite about it (eternal optimist here *grin*).
So tell me about your names whether your actual or what you use in your books! I’d love to hear.
