Soooo.. about that Genre thing.. and WE GOT THE HOBBIT!

October 27, 2010 by Nicole 18 Comments

Okay.  I’ve just realized something. DON’T LAUGH!  *sigh* okay you can laugh.
As you all know I’ve written a Fantasy story.  Part one of a Trilogy.  It’s about a bunch of arse-kicking girls taking on one heck of a challenge.
And..
I’ve just clicked (yes, after working on it for nearly two years)..
It’s a romance.
*WAIL* How did this happen?  I hate romances!!
Well except that I enjoyed Twilight.. And I love, love, love The Outlander Series which now that I think about it does have a rather strong theme of romance.  And so does Pride and Prejudice.. And the Earth Children’s series by Jean Auel.
But I never really thought of them as romances!  Sure there’s the occasional passionate scene but it’s more about the awesome female leads!  The action, the excitement and the…
oh yeah.. romance…
*sigh*  So there you go.  I’ve written a Fantasy Romance.  I guess I should have clicked at the spell scene.  I suppose this isn’t too awful..  Maybe I’ll sleep on it.

And WE GOT THE HOBBIT WE GOT THE HOBBIT!!!!  *whew* the whole country has been in suspense waiting to hear if we’d get it after the silly union nearly screwed if for everyone *rollseyes* and yay it’s sorted and we got it : )

I also still need a couple more votes for the anagram winner – please have a look at the post below (and watch the bush video too! Ohh I so want to be there *sigh*) and pick your favourite and let me know in the comments of either this post or that post.  Actually of any post is fine cause they alll come through to my e-mail : )
Have an awesome day!

You know there's nothing wrong with calling it an Action romance, or Suspense romance or even a drama…:)

Hi Summer 🙂 That's true, but it's very much a fantasy too ;p And who are you voting for??

A couple of the ladies in my crit group went to a Romance Writers of America Conference and they were told to put a percentage of each genre in their queries… so 85% Action, 15% Romance (or whatever). That way you can submit to agents that deal with the greater weighted genre. At least that's what I was told. Might help to check it out, anyway. Good luck, though! 🙂

Haha – congrats on the romance and the Hobbit 😉 I think that a little romance is hard to avoid in any sort of books, and fantasy books with a romantic aspect do seem to be quite the hit these days, so it might be the smartest thing you ever did…

There always has to be romance. It just isn't a good story without it. Glad to hear about the Hobbit too.

Embrace it…Really it doesn't matter what genre you story is, as long as it's a good story! And good stories often have good romance attached. GOOD romance, not plug 'n chug bodice rippers. Besides, by industry standards, if it's predominantly about the gals and their powers, then it's not a romance! It's an epic fantasy, or paranormal…or whatever you wanna call it.

I'm glad they've sorted things so that The Hobbit can get rolling, and most stories have some kind of love story going on.

I don't mind Romance myself, as long as there's enough action/adventure/other stuff. LOL.

Awesome that YOU GOT THE HOBBIT! 😀

I like a bit of romance in my adventure/fantasy novels. Though, I have found that there's a bit more than I was expecting in my own WIP. I knew it was gonna have some, but wasn't expecting quite what I got. lol

Isn't it funny how you can spend so much time with something and still be surprised by it? I think that's one of the reasons I love writing. It's always changing and you're always seeing something new in it, even the things you write yourself.

Lovely news about the Hobbit. I loved how beautiful the landscape was in LotRs, so I'm really excited to see more of it in the Hobbit. It's great that it's being made there. 🙂

"Fantasy romance" is cool – but don't you just hate these categories? My fantasy novel has some (slightly spiky) romance in it too. It also has a few jokes in it yet I wouldn't call it a comedy. I think it's a shame things get crammed into boxes like this …

Pleased about The Hobbit. I shouldn't say this loudly but I was slightly disappointed it didn't come here to the UK. I live very near some of the places that originally inspired Tolkien that I'd love to see used. But, fair enough, it will be the same land as LOTR now, which is cool. Mainly I'm just glad they're going to start filming. Although, I remain to be convinced the story will split succesfully into two halves …
