When I began writing BirthRight it was a story just for me and my friends. It wasn’t going to be seen by anyone. And it was fun! A heap of hard work that made me swiftly appreciate all the good books I’ve read (and scold the bad ones..). The more the story developed the more it began to occur to me. It had potential. A LOT of potential.
I finished the draft and had a shot at getting an agent and for sending out only 30 queries (on a first draft *blush*) I did pretty well. In the mean time I read more about publishing and developed my story more. I stumbled across a blog ‘A Newbie’s Guide to Publishing’ by Joe Konrath. After reading a couple of posts I’d learnt all about e-books and self publishing (different to vanity publishing). The numbers Joe was talking about were very interesting so I did some more research into what authors receive and what rights they have.
I wasn’t impressed. For the large amount of work they do the authors receive very little. Yes I understand the costs of publishing a book and all that but really, if you do the math it doesn’t add up.
Self publishing has been echoing in my head since. Then I started my blog. I’d read on a literary agents blog that it was necessary to have a ‘platform’.
I had it in mind that when I reached 100 followers I would make this announcement. Cept I hit 100 followers rather quickly and chickened out.
I made the next goal 500. Which is fine and I’m half way there but the plan which has been developing itself in my head for the last year needs to be put into action. It’s now or never!!
It is my intention to publish
BirthRight: Book 1 – The Arrival,
January 1, 2011.
BirthRight: Book 1 – The Arrival,

*Arrgghh* Wow I just wrote that down… now I have to do it..
The plan is.
Finish the manuscript
Edit, proof and polish the manuscript
Write the Synopsis
Create the cover
Find reviewers
Advertise
Load and hit publish
And I want it done and ready by the end of November so I can down tools till the end of December. Yep that’s all ; p
So while everyone else is doing the ‘write a novel in a month’ I’m doing the ‘ready a novel for publication in a month’.
If anyone is interested in helping with any of the above tasks you know I’d LOVE to hear from you, otherwise keep watching this blog.
Who knows what’ll come from it!! *gulp*

Thoughts in Progress
I will absolutely help in ANY way that I can. GO YOU!!!
I will sit on the sidelines and watch how this unfolds for you and learn from your experiences… yeah… that sounds like a nice lazy way to do things 😉
Wow! Best of luck with that! 🙂 The getting up followers idea was a really good one before announcing it. I swear, the monkey helped with the reveal!
Congrats! I am in the process of self publishing my memoir (diaries of a teenage bride) and working on a nonfiction work!!! super fun!!!
Congrats, Nicole! That's big news. :o) Best of luck!!
I think the hardest part of this writing business is believeing in yourself; once you have that, anything's possible. Go for it!
PS. Get well for Otis.
