Wednesday Review – At the end of the world

June 15, 2011 by Nicole 4 Comments

You know, the book cover I’ve had in my side bar for yonks ;p I finally read it now that I have my shiny new kindle *swoon*. Okay so I gave this book 3 stars and here is the review I posted on Amazon. I may have wrote it at a certain time of the month when I’m a little, shall we say… brisk? That said I wouldn’t retract anything. This is what I promised, honest reviews giving my opinion (just gonna stress that word opinion – before someone lynch’s me).

At the end of the world – By Mark MacPherson

3 stars

Technically speaking this book had all the makings of something I was going to love. Mayan history, a kiwi lead (hey there’s only 4 million of us – we gotta stick together ;p) and an exciting mystery. Unfortunately I found it incredibly lifeless. The author is very descriptive to his own detriment. Too often things in the book were described at least three times over. The main character I had no real feeling for or interest in and reading the story ended up feeling like a trial. I still believe with a decent amount of re-working this book could be good, but it read like the author hasn’t yet discovered his voice and because of that, I as a reader just wasn’t caught by the story.

So finally, a Wednesday review!! And pop by next Wednesday for my very first author interview *oooo* exciting stuff : )

Take care all!

Thanks for the review. Excessive description turns me off too!

This reminds me that I have your book to read and review, Nicole. =)

I have to say, your review actually makes me curious to read the book myself. See what I think about it. We all know what may work for someone blows another away. Or maybe I'm just weird like that. lol

Hi BB – it's a hard balance to have enough description to keep the pages turning but not so much that the pages start flying as the reader skims through it all ;p

Not weird at all Pat – and that's a good thing, for the author especially *grin* Quite a few of the books I love receive not-so-good reviews from other people, that's what makes reviews so interesting 🙂

Hi! Sorry I haven't been around much lately. I have been swamped at work….Anyways, enough of that! I finished your book and I loved it!!!! I just published the review on Amazon under my pen name, Gigi!
I can't wait for your next book.
Have a nice weekend. Sorry it took so long for me to publish my review, but I just thought of it and I stopped everything and wrote it! hehehe
