With my
draft now in the hands of editor extraordinaire (otherwise know as Trish!) I’m
having to find new writing projects. Okay not exactly having to ‘find’ them,
rather I’m trying to tame the multitude of crazy ideas into some actual plots.
But when I went to start a new draft, I got a little stumped with the point of
view. If you’ve read The Arrival and Awakening, you’ll know I just can’t
choose! I love both styles and mixing them up makes sense – in my head anyway

But if I
could choose just one?
could choose just one?
I’m really
not sure. Most the books I love are in first person but then I love some
phenomenal books that are written in third person too. And do I have to choose?
Actually yes, I think I do. For the next two plots I’m working on I want the
focus to be just on the single person, but if I write in third person I don’t
think it feels as ‘real’ as in first. And if I write in first then I don’t get
to show the reader as much of the world as I’d like.

Ahhhh…
decisions! As a reader or writer (or both) what is your preference?

Take care all!

I have absolutely no preference – so long as the story is fab!!
Have a great weekend and yay for your finished draft now with your editor! Take care
x
Thanks, Old Kitty – have a fab weekend too 🙂
I don't have a preference when reading, but I like writing in third much more than first. There's a nice immediacy to first; however, it's limited to what the main characters know and you can't show the reader anything else.
I really can't pic! *lol* might be a case of trying it both ways and then seeing which I prefer 😉
As a writer or reader — First personally. I find it easier to relate to the character. In terms of finding crafty ways around the 1 person POV in first *grin* You can maybe change per chapter, or book. But whatever you do, decide from the start and continue that way. It's disorientating to have read tons of a book and for it to then change POV. Maybe pick a specific number of character's whose POV you might be from. OTHERWISE it get's too confusing, like- wait, who am i again??? haha xx 🙂
Very sound advice, Kitty Kat 😉
I don't think I could ever write in first person. I don't want to be THAT much in my character's head!
*lol* really, Alex? That's the bit I LOVE about writing in first person 🙂
Hi Nicole
Well, that's a loaded question. You know I love third person. You can change POV to illustrate what another character is feeling, thinking, experiencing. However, in today's market, 1st person is definitely big. Almost all the best sellers are 1st person with some notable exceptions. (Harry Potter for one.) I love a good challenge so I have at least one series which will be in 1st person, but some must be in third. What do the characters say? Only a writer will understand that question.
Good luck.
Nancy
I'm playing with third person only at the moment 🙂
If you love 1st person, but want to show more, you can do what Simone Eckeles has done. She uses 1st person for both MCs. She just labels the chapter as to whose head you are in.
Hmmm.. that's the one type of first person I usually don't like, Stacy 😉 But I know what you mean 🙂
I write a lot in first person, but it's not by choice. I start writing however the characters sound in my head. Sometimes it's in first and sometimes it's in third. No idea why.
*lol* I so know what you mean!! I find exactly the same thing when writing 🙂
