Plagiarism… of a review??

December 12, 2012 by Nicole 15 Comments

Reviews in
general are useful. They give you an idea of what others thought and
potentially what you might think – though not necessarily the way the reviewer
may have hoped. For example if I read a review on a book and it mentions ‘love
triangle’ or ‘angst’ or ‘strong brooding male’ I shudder and click to the next
book. But that’s just me ;p
Occasionally
you do of course get the shill reviews; like the recent review on my second
book, Awakening. I don’t know if the author paid for a review or someone else
did or it’s genuinely just a mistake but it’s a tad amusing… I have left a
comment pointing out that the reviewer has given a four star review to the
wrong book so I hope no one paid for the review – because they sure aren’t getting their money’s worth *lol*. Then on Goodreads today I was having a
glance over the books I’ve reviewed and saw a fellow indie’s book that I’d
loved and placed a five star review on – Lunar Light by Penelope Fletcher. I
clicked on to see what recent reviews had been like and stopped short when I
discovered my own review copy and pasted under someone else’s name with four
stars. Well.
Not entirely
sure what I think of that but I am tempted to pop a comment on along the lines
of ‘I’m really glad you liked my review so much, word for word in fact’
*grin*  but I’ll probably leave it. Has
anyone else had their review pinched? Or is this a new thing? Do you think I
should pop a comment on…?
Take care all!

I wouldn't do anything, Nicole. It may well be a troll and you don't want to engage because it could get messy.

But it is really funny you should mention this because a couple of days ago I got a review that was almost verbatim of another one. Just weird. I mean, why bother? It was an alright review – I just thought it very strange.

Well I sure do…is there a way to send a comment to the person that took your review?

Not privately, they have their account on private. But I could comment on the review. I'm just not sure it's worth it. And I wouldn't want them to remove the review – it does add to the rankings and I really did enjoy the story!

OH. I am afraid I'd pop in a comment and it would not be a nice one. I believe this is called plagiarism and it is just plain wrong.

It is plagiarism and it is wrong – but it's not costing me anything and it is adding to the good ranking on a book I enjoyed. While I'm annoyed at it, maybe the reader just sucks at writing reviews?

I've heard others say they've had their reviews plagiarized. The only people I've seen do something about it is book reviewers but I can't blame them for being mad.

It's annoying, I guess I'll just have to laugh it off ;p

I once did a negative review on a mp3 player I didn't like and posted it on the Walmart web site and on its listing on Amazon. Then somebody that didn't like my review left a nasty comment about it on both of them. They didn't think I should be allowed to use my own review on two sites. I was surprised to see somebody so interested in one of my reviews to track it down in both web sites just to make a nasty comment on it.

Weird how some people get about reviews. But with something so non personal?? That is strange!
