I know I’ve spoken about Wattpad before,
but I’m going to again. Mainly because Wattpad is one of my favourite places.
If you’re looking for a community of readers and writers with little to gain
from it other than the genuine pleasure gained from reading and writing, then
Wattpad is it. There are the usual forums and stuff, but I don’t get involved
in that. I just pop my work up – what I’m allowed to, be aware that if you use
KDP select like I do for my ebook set then you won’t be able to put all your
works up without violating KDP select rules. I can get away with having The
Arrival up in its entirety but that’s because it’s also available for free
everywhere. So if you have a free book, I’d suggest sharing it on Wattpad too.

It’s a place where you get to genuinely
interact with readers – where they can comment on chapters, highlight
selections to share and message you privately or publically. Yes, like with
everything on the net there are always a percentage of trolls, but I find it
fairly small on Wattpad. Mainly (I think) because there’s little to gain from
it. Also, you can delete unhelpful/spiteful/unnecessary comments. Which puts
the control in the writer’s hands. I’ve found some fascinating pieces of
writing by authors on Wattpad and I know of writer friends who garner
inspiration and help from Wattpad buddies.

It may not be to everyone’s taste, but if
you’re a newbie wanting to get feedback then I think Wattpad is a nice way to
start. Or, if like me you have a few novels out there, then it is another way
to reach readers. Wattpad is fairly teen – new adult (20’s) orientated but
other than erotica I think you could try a variety of genres out on it. It’s a
great way to get a feel for new topics that you’re testing the waters with.
