Life Updates

October 7, 2018 by Nicole Leave a Comment

It feels like it’s been forever since I had a chance to sit down and do this. In my defence, I’ve “written” lots of posts in my head *lol* I just forget them by the time I regain consciousness (hello grand plans at 2am – anyone else get those?). With a bunch of different projects on the go, I thought I should note them down in a blog post 🙂

Three months back from Singapore (*sob* miss it SO much!) and the weather here is finally starting to get nice. We’ve switched to daylight saving hours which means it is now bizarrely light at 7.15pm as I type this. And yesterday, I actually had to turn the air-con ON! For all of two hours. Pretty darn exciting ;p Right now it’s got a pleasant cool tinge to the air, so the cat is spread out on the sun warmed carpet near me, purring away madly after downing another bowl of her beloved sludge. Which is also known as those cat food sachets blended so she’ll actually eat it all rather than just licking off the gravy and leaving the meat to dry out. Yes, we’ve turned into THOSE crazy cat people. Now, onto the various projects in life…

Amazon

It’s been over a year and I just popped my paid books back on Amazon. I have increased the price on all sites bar my bookstore to accommodate for the amount those sites charge so there is a $2 difference between my bookstore, and the big main bookstores. So if you know of any friends itching to buy any of my books, do them a favour and direct them to the bargains on my personal bookstore *grin*

Wire Wrapped Dreams

Having just switched servers to Siteground – click here for their awesome pricing and service (this is a referral link) –  after discovering I had made the mistake of joining a hosting company that is part of a very large company which in short gives you utter rubbish service/speed and pricey renewals – here’s a great post if you want more in-depth info – I am in the process of re-designing my jewellery site. I am still creating beautiful pieces in the evenings (when not on my computer/reading) and they are looking for forever homes. I want a website to fit the look I envision, so this is a new learning curb I’m tackling thanks to an intensive Youtube video (isn’t YouTube AMAZING! You can find practically anything on it!!).

Book Geek Chic

I am busy designing pieces that are “print on demand” items. The test products I’ve received so far are fantastic and I’m really excited to get these pieces live. The countdown is on as I work towards this and I can’t wait to show you!

Pandora’s Curse, Bound by Blood Book One

With the story busy churning away in my mind, I’m adding to it daily. Given my writing has been on a real hiatus, this is a big deal for me. I really can’t wait to get this whole trilogy drafted and off to my Beta readers *eeeee*

Paperbacks

Book two is close to ready to go, and Book three and AfterBurn are getting there. I’m just waiting for the right time *cough* moolah to allow for me to get them all up and in their physical forms! To those of you with real copies of the new look Book One, I am envious, I still don’t own one as yet *lol*. We’ll get there!

Slowing down in the Writing Rat Race

May 2, 2017 by Nicole 3 Comments

Life, if you haven’t seen the updates on my social media pages, has been a bit chaotic for me since the end of December. I made the decision to apply for a role that was a major change from my front-desk reception role. Given that my entire work experience revolves around customer service, and admin work, this was an abrupt change in direction. But only if you view my “normal” work. Instead, the focus became almost solely on my novel writing. My “hobby” is what synched me this new role. Every novelist dreams that their writing will bring them the big bucks to continue writing. This new role has done so, in a manner of speaking. The bucks aren’t huge compared to coasting the bestseller lists, but they are stable, AND, most importantly, the role is entirely about writing. Just non-fiction instead of fiction *grin*.

Finally, for the first time in my life, I have a job I love. A job I utterly yearned for from the moment of its hinted inception (receptionists listen – always remember that!). But it is taking up more of the most precious commodity we all have.

Time.

I’m not one to write well under anxiety, and the application process took close to two months. Plus the constant voices in my head, swinging from assertively positive, to pragmatically negative, meant that inspiration for novel writing completely evaded me. And that in turn has made me rethink my writing.

I love to write. I love creating worlds and characters that take me away to foreign worlds/times.

I DON’T love feeling as if anything I do is never enough. I really don’t like feeling that I’m part of an intense never-ending marathon run at a sprint. It’s just not sustainable.

I had intended to write and release the Bound by Blood trilogy this year. Now, however, I’m adjusting that goal. I have every intention to write and release Pandora’s Curse, book one of the Bound by Blood trilogy. But the other two books, well they may take me a couple of years.

And that’s okay.

Sometimes, when you get so involved in a Community that seems to have such a tunnel vision of an end goal (bestseller list, bestseller list, bestseller list), you forget what your original goal was.

To write.

To enjoy writing.

Pandora’s Curse: Chapter Twenty

September 4, 2016 by Nicole Leave a Comment

Oh my goodness – I can’t believe I missed a week!! I’ve been crazy busy with life stuff, some good, some fairly awful, but things will right themselves, they always do. Also, I’ve been rediscovering the joys of photoshop! For years my precious, but ancient, HP all-in-one computer just hasn’t been strong enough to be able to use photoshop. But now, with my gorgeous (and not anywhere close to top of the line, yet still MILES ahead of my PC) laptop I can officially create my OWN covers! A very exciting step forward that I have been obsessed with morning and night for the last week plus. But that’s because I’m hoping to release Pandora’s Curse, the complete and edited version, later this month. So naturally a gorgeous cover is required. I can’t wait to show you all it!

Now, onto the next chapter!

Chapter Twenty

‘Hurry! HURRY! Get them to the infirm!’

‘What can it be?’

‘Get back! All of you!’

Voices swam in and out of Eoin’s head, light and images too, like instant snapshots of moments that then blurred beyond recognition. His body seemed to float one moment then jolt away unpleasantly the next. His mind tried again and again to make his mouth say her name, but it wouldn’t work, he could barely even groan, tongue thick and awkward in his mouth.

‘She’s unconscious! Quick!’

‘Please stay calm, we don’t need you all here. Some space please.’

Eoin clung to that calm, assured voice as the floating sensation continued then suddenly stopped. Eyes fluttering, he moaned when heat flushed his skin before a sudden a cooling weight touched his forehead. He sighed in relief.

‘Fevers, loss of consciousness, what could they have possibly picked up?’

‘I thought we were impervious to almost everything.’

‘Almost.’

‘We’d better quarantine them.’

The voices vanished just as Eoin turned cold, body shivering teeth chattering. It made the swelling heat in his mind feel even worse.

Time and space merged chaotically within his head. No longer did the voices creep in, instead blurring colours that surged and throbbed, leaving him in a permanent state of nausea. Searing heat flooding the length of his body that seemed to float weightlessly until the aching cold crept along, turning his limbs to dead ice leaving him gasping for breath.

Everything stopped.

Eoin opened his eyes.

A gentle throbbing sound filled his ears as his eyes took in the timber ceiling above. It took a moment to realise the sound was rain, heavy rain on the roof. The smell in the air was fresh and clean and he turned his head toward it, spotting the propped open window.

A sound caught his attention, head snapping around in a manner that wrenched his neck muscles, making his stomach lurch and eyes water. Mind spinning from the unexpected jolt of pain, he took a moment to register the figure on the bed parallel to his.

‘Ally!’

Limbs stiff from disuse shocked and concerned him as Eoin struggled to sit up, then turn and lower himself to the floor. The cooling sensation the wood floor gave through the soles of his feet made him realise they’d passed into their rainy season. How long have we been out of it? Were we away that long? The thoughts troubled him as he reached his wife’s side.

Flushed with fever, Ally moaned when he gently stroked her face. Eoin jerked his hand away, alarmed and horrified. What had he done?

They found him crouched beside her bed, head resting on his hands as he watched her fitful sleep.

At the soft sound of footfall Eoin lifted his head, turning to look dolefully over his shoulder.

Ally’s father, Councillor Cato, stood watching him from the doorway.

‘It’s good to see you well, Eoin,’ Cato said, mouth passive but eyes alert as always. ‘What did you find on your travels?’ He walked to Ally’s bed and sat in the seat at the foot of it. Eoin stared at his wife’s face, mind considering the safe option to answer.

‘We found a Promethean Lab,’ Eoin said slowly, reluctantly turning his gaze from Ally’s face, to her father’s sombre expression. The man had the same dark hair and violet eyes as Ally, common traits in hunters. But his lips were thin where Ally’s were full and his sharp cheekbones leant him an oriental look. Ally’s mother, whom Eoin fervently wished where here this moment, had the classic strong face of a woman born to this area but, quite remarkably given both her parents were blond, had dark hair to go with light blue eyes.

It was these little changes, the changes to eye and hair colour which had their scientists excited, desperately hoping for a natural evolution of their created species. To escape the genetic shackles imposed on them by humans so they might truly be able to live. To reproduce at a rate that would sustain their population; which at the current rate meant the inevitable extinction of their species.

Eoin felt no guilt for his intentions with his created virus. The world needed this change. Change HAD to happen. But with his beautiful wife lying prone, limp with fever before him, the sense of devastation he’d unwittingly wielded on her made him furious at himself.

Why hadn’t he been quicker with the gun!

Cato cleared his throat. ‘How did you know it was a Promethean Lab? What made it different to the other labs discovered?’

Eoin blinked, mind freezing for a moment. ‘Oh! Uhh, well the microscope in the vehicle I brought back for you, that was from the lab. The equipment was capable of performing various medical procedures for a Promethean body. It understood our differences compared to humans.’ He found himself babbling away, avoiding any mention of Holi or the genetic printing machine.

Cato focused on Eoin’s first sentence, a pleased smile spreading. ‘That microscope is for me?’

‘It is,’ Eoin said with a sense of relief.

‘It looks far more advanced, we haven’t found anything like that before. And that vehicle!’

Eoin nodded in agreement, half wincing when his brain protested at the motion, dehydration creeping up on him. ‘A moment,’ he said to Cato and standing, he walked the few steps to the table between the beds, pouring himself a cup of water. Cato shook his head when Eoin inclined the jug toward him.

‘No. But what are your thoughts? Have the human labs we found been older?’

‘Actually,’ Eoin said croakily, the water replenishing then almost parching his throat as his body greedily embraced it. ‘I suspect the human labs are younger. Created after the Event. It would explain why they’ve never had provisions for Prometheans.’

‘Created at the time of the shift?’ Cato said thoughtfully, referring innocuously to that infamous time in their history when Prometheans realised they could sit at the top of the food chain. With humans an easy prey. Eoin suspected, even with as genteel and welcoming as Cato was toward humans who chose to coexist with them in their town, that he’d make no objections to a return to such ways. Cato was imminently pragmatic when it came to the fate of their opposing species. Survival of the fittest and all. Eoin however wasn’t as short-sighted.

‘Yes,’ Eoin said. ‘At the time and after. It would also explain why certain pieces of equipment didn’t fit the others.’

‘What made you choose the microscope as the gift for me?’ Cato asked, eyes veiled as he leaned back in his seat. The tone made Eoin inwardly cringe. Always testing. Always wanting him to admit he wasn’t good enough for Ally; didn’t matter that it was her choice.

He couldn’t help the derisive exhalation and it caused Cato’s eyes to narrow.

Ally whimpered. Both men dropped the rising sense of contention and leaned toward the woman, Eoin gently picking her hand up.

‘Eo-in?’

Ally’s eyes fluttered and he leaned closer, switching hands so to stroke her face gently.

‘Love?’

She gave a shuddering inhalation then turned her head, beautiful eyes opening and peered at him.

‘We’re okay?’

He was on his feet, an arm beneath her upper body as he hugged her close, trying to be gentle but wanting to hold her so very tight in that moment.

‘You’re both fine,’ Cato said in a dry tone. Eoin pulled back from Ally, still propping her up, so she could see her father.

‘Papa!’

Face softening with a genuine smile, Cato came to kiss his daughter on the forehead. She gave a happy sigh and leaned against Eoin, eyes half closed in exhaustion.

‘Do we know what it was?’ she asked Eoin, her hand gently squeezing his.

Cato answered just as a doctor stepped through the door. The woman smiled at the three of them, showcasing a bright smile against deep mahogany skin complimented with a dense mass of black curls she’d wrapped back with a scarf.

‘Leesa!’ Ally said in delight and the men moved apart as Leesa dived at her with arms outstretched.

‘Holy heck woman!’ Leesa exclaimed in her casual bedside manner, causing Cato and Eoin to exchange an amused glance. The moment was brief, Cato’s expression sliding back to passive as he turned his attention pointedly to his daughter and her friend.

‘You scared the bejesus out of me! Do you know what your temperature’s been? You’ve been cooking yourself from the inside out.’ Leesa paused then, suddenly staring at Ally, then Eoin, then Cato with a frozen expression as her hands flew to her mouth.

‘Leesa!’ Ally said while reaching for her friend’s hands. ‘What is it? You’re scaring me.’

The shocked expression melted in an instant and the woman snorted before reaching behind Ally’s back to plump the cushions up for her.

‘Well! Serves you right then.’ She paused again, looking at each of them again as the strangest smile tugged at her lips. She turned back to Ally.

‘Girl..’ she laughed and shook her head eyes instantly shiny with tears. ‘Girl you’re PREGNANT!’

Eoin blinked.

Blinked again.

There was a thump behind him as Cato sat heavily down in the seat.

Ally gaped at Leesa, mouth working before her gaze shifted, hunting him. They stared at each other in astonishment before a smile near split Ally’s face in two.

‘We’re having a BABY!’

Pandora’s Curse: Chapter Eight

June 6, 2016 by Nicole Leave a Comment

Sorry for the lateness of this upload! I finally had to change to a new computer- and after a good ten years on my old one I’ve got SOOO much stuff to transfer and work through. Now, let’s get back to Ally and Eoin! Here is Chapter Eight ? Please remember this is a rough draft, and as the author I own FULL copyright to it. This work may not be copied/shared in any manner other than a link to this blog. Thanks and enjoy!

Pandora's Curse

Chapter Eight

A cupboard in the short hallway between the main room and bedroom quarters revealed exciting contents when Ally discovered it. Torches, like nothing she’d ever seen before, and various kits – according to their labels. A first aid kit, an exploratory kit, a mechanics kit, and several other all carefully slotted into narrow shelves that could be dragged up or down, conveyor belt style, to an easy height. There were far more shelves than the height of the door, vanishing high within the wall. Ally tried to wedge her head alongside to see, but it was a tight seal, nothing visible.

Ignoring the kits for the moment she turned her attention to the torches, ears pricking when Eoin muttered away to himself in the main room. She was done with study for the time being, she wanted to stretch her legs, to explore the jungle. That word twigged in her mind and she reached up, pulling the shelves down until the exploratory kit came into view. Sliding it out the shelf, she set it by her feet then returned to examining the torch.

Ally knew it was a torch from the label, but without that label she’d never have recognized it. Palm sized, curved but thin and molded in a diamond shape. Lifting it, she turned it this way and that, trying to understand how it worked. Holding it close to her chest, she attempted to twist it to see if it opened. A hum vibrated through her hands and an instant later the device flattened against her chest. With a gasp of surprise she tried to tug it off but it didn’t budge, fixed firmly to her shirt. Running her fingers over it, Ally triggered something, making it hum again then a sphere of light appeared before her. A smile of thrilled delight flashed across her face as she realised that this was the torch. Hurrying to the bedroom quarters, she deactivated the lights. The sphere of light projected at the perfect height, illuminating the room to a level comparable to the normal lighting. Satisfied, she left the room and grabbed the exploratory kit which was handily contained in a simple backpack. Rummaging through the contents she decided they should suffice her intent and without calling out to Eoin, not interested in debating whether or not she should, climbed the stairs and exited the lab.

Walking the tunnel toward the hole Ally threw her shoulders back and breathed deep. The air in the lab must be recycled she realised while relishing the fresh crisp air in the open tunnel. The tunnel seemed shorter now she knew the way and what to expect and when she reached the end rain drizzled down lightly, dampening everything. Staying in the shelter of the tunnel for the moment, she removed the backpack and squatted down to rummage through it. First she removed some basic climbing equipment, ropes, a harness and the smallest carabiners she’d ever seen. Close examination suggested they might be made of the same titanium alloy as the tunnel and lab. Ally nodded in approval. Next she removed a small parcel that when opened unfolded to a good size parka with a neat hood and front pocket. Shrugging this on, she climbed into the harness and fastened it firm around the waist and not too firm around her thighs. Swinging the backpack back on, she carried a rope in one hand then after studying the height of the hole slung the rope to rest around her neck. Reaching up, getting a good hold of a deep thick root, Ally looked for her next hold and with a grunt of effort lifted herself up.

It wasn’t the easiest climb, with chunks of dirt vanishing beneath her hands and feet as she fought for a hold but inch by inch she edged her way up. Finally she reached the top and with a groan of relief rolled herself over to the jungle floor.

The rain misted softly through gaps in the canopy and the whole jungle was a symphony of rain. Plunking through leaves, softly splattering to the soft floor, plinking off branches and dripping with a constant staccato echo. Catching her breath, Ally sat up with her face tilted high, enjoying the fresh coolness of the rain that helped to smother the heavy humidity. The sounds of the rain and the chattering birds as they scarpered amongst the canopy and branches, some venturing lower to hunt water logged insects on the thick leaf matter of the jungle floor provided a much needed reprieve from the constant hum of electricity in the laboratory. The tension that had drawn tight lines across Ally’s shoulders and down her spine slowly dissipated as her senses adjusted to this peaceful space. Pushing to her feet, brushing off the dirt and leaves she’d accumulated, Ally lifted the coil of rope from around her neck and began examining the edge of the sink hole. It took several turns around the perimeter before she spotted the right place. A heavy root that connected to a large tree some distance away crept over the edge of the hole, creating the perfect concealment. Crouching to rummage through the pack, Ally removed two larger carabiners and a curious looking metal pin. The pin when twisted opened to create an anchor. With some wangling she managed to force the pin deep into the underside of the thick root and opened it, so it held solidly. The two carabiners and the length of rope were contrived to create an easy method of exiting the hole and Ally let the length of moss green rope tuck beneath a couple of the long trailing vines that she repositioned down the hole. Standing back, she rubbed her palms against her pants, leaving muddy smears as she cocked her head, studying to see if her work was easily visible. After checking from several angles, she was satisfied that only she should be able to pick it out.

Grabbing the pack from where it sat beneath a low bush, partially shielded from the rain, Ally groped for the kit. All fitted tidily into a thin metal box, lengths of incredibly fine thread were neatly wound in figure eight loops. Taking a skein of the thread, Ally paced out a large ring around the hole, carefully setting out a large trip wire. She made sure to keep it low, almost as low as the dense soft ground cover. If someone stepped into it they would likely shake their foot loose without too much examination with so many vines and roots everywhere. With the wire in place, Ally opened the kit again and removed a tiny homing device. It looked like a small silver ball with a protruding tab. Holi had explained to Ally that when the tab was removed, the device would begin to emit a silent frequency that she could track. Designed for use as an emergency beacon, the device would make the perfect trigger. Quickly and tightly Ally fastened the beacon into the trip wire. As soon as someone connected with it they would know about it back in the lab, giving them a bit of time. Taking another skein of thread, testing it between her hands to check its strength, Ally created another trip wire in a different area. In all she arranged eight separate wires, hopefully any approaching humans would hit at least one of them.

Rising to standing after setting the last beacon in place, Ally tipped her head back, enjoying breathing deep for a few moments while listening to the sounds. Bird and animal cry all sounded normal, the occasional urgent cries punctuating the peace as something was hunted. Walking to the edge of the hole, carefully stepping over the wires on the way, Ally heaved a sigh of regret as she located the rope and made her way back down to the tunnel.

Something gorgeous!

October 27, 2015 by Nicole Leave a Comment

Quite a while back I was privileged to meet a local artist who’d gone out and created a children’s book. And by created I mean written (all rhyming no less!) and designed an adorably quirky wee tale.

His unique style stuck in my mind and when I got an invite to a gallery of his work I was delighted to accept. After seeing his clever creations first hand again, I got thinking.

I’ve always wanted to have the girls in a cartoon style…
We met up and nutted out a few ideas. Unfortunately things haven’t worked out quite as either of us hoped for now, so we can’t continue any further at this stage, but Anton has very generously allowed me to show you the beginning of the designs. Please keep in mind he never intended these for public viewing, but as ‘drafts’ go I think these are just gorgeous!!!

I just love the almost Disney cuteness of the girls here in these caricatures. He’s captured a nice amount of personality in each image. Hopefully in the future we can see more of these ;D
If you would like to see more of Anton’s work you can follow his facebook page here OR his blog here!
