You’ve heard of method acting, what about method writing?

July 2, 2010 by Nicole 4 Comments

We’ve all had the discussions as to whether or not you’re a ‘pantser’ or ‘plotter’ but do you method write?

Allow me to go into the intricacies surrounding…my writing style (dramatic enough for you? Must be the last post echoing in my head – angst! Drama! Moping ; p).

Back to topic.  When I started BirthRight it began with the first intense fighting scene (and no not the one in the first pages – a MUCH more exciting one!).  After e-mailing the version off to my friends who I’d given starring roles, it occurred to me that I could consider turning it into a story.  After all no one was marking it and it’d just be something fun for me and my friends.  14 months later and after realising it wasn’t half bad I’ve decided to progress with the publication idea.

Now I don’t have any form of ‘training’ when it comes to writing except for the normal high school stuff so from the beginning I’ve been dutifully plotting out the story and then having my ‘pantser’ moments between the plotted points.  And included in all of this, is my ‘method writing’ style.

Maybe this is partially due to being a Leo and thus somewhat obsessed with my reflection, I don’t know but when working through scenes I frequently find myself acting them out.  If the character cries then I’m sobbing as I type (actually, as I plan the sentence, then I pause the blubbering to type the sentence), if the character is angry then I’m furious (note to Glenn – flee while you can!! ; p).  In the embarrassing scenes I’m blushing furiously and in the ‘ahem’ ..naughty scenes – well I’m thinking naughty thoughts (and I hope like mad no-one is ever witness to my face at those moments)!! *lol*

Music helps me to get to this ‘method writing’ place and frequently inspires ideas.  Which is great!  Except I keep slipping into the method style whenever I’m listening to music.  In the car, on the train, while walking to meet the girls at lunch – and as anyone who knows me (or has watched my video posts) is aware, I show EVERYTHING on my face.
So this explains why people give me an exceptionally wide birth when I’m charging down Lambton Quay while listening to Evanescent (which is always my scary fight scene music – drama people drama!).  Or when I’m listening to something cute and flirty as I walk to the train and suddenly realise a large number of males are giving me the Joey from friends ‘how you doing..?’ looks.
And maaannnn is it a good thing that I run very early in the morning.  I have songs that inspire sooo many crazy thoughts on my morning jog playlist.  What I really want now is the Transformers sound track *mwahaha* for exceptionally evil thoughts!

So am I completely alone in this insanity?? Do you also have to be careful while driving the car as the radio can literally transfer you to another world (Yeah! Killing uglies – ARRRGHH! Car stopped dead ahead Brakes! Brakes!).
Tell me! Share the craziness *grin*
