Thursday’s Writing Tip – Let go of fear!

May 12, 2011 by Nicole 14 Comments

Everyone has their own things that ‘scare’ them with writing. For me, it was the thought of writing two or three things at the same time. I just couldn’t fathom creating such wildly different (or even similar) stories at the same time. But over the past couple of months it’s been happening.. Slowly and sneakily other ideas have, or are, gathering form quicker than I expected or even wanted.
Why have I been scared of this? Well I’ve been worried that it’ll take the ‘passion’ out of my current pet love (BirthRight) and that it’ll stop me reaching my desired deadline of Christmas. But I’m beginning to realize a few things.
The more I create, the more I can create. When I get stuck on a scene in Awakening I’m finding that if I shift to something different (can’t get much more different than A Wet & Wild night ;p) it allows other ideas in and then I can solve the dilemma in a way that just didn’t occur to me before.
Now the next thing that made me nervous was ‘but if I’m working on something other than Awakening, how will I finish it in time?’
To which one of those ‘other’ voices in my mind (and if you’ve read The Arrival, you’ll be familiar with this concept) quietly pointed out.
‘would you prefer to be stuck with writers block for a week, doing nothing. OR. Write something else for an hour, which breaks the writers block and allows you to work on Awakening. 1 hour lost compared to a week’s worth of writing time.’
And that other voice isn’t wrong. It adds up well.
I’m still fighting off the panicky silly voice at the moment, it’s doing a lot of hyperventilating and has major butterflies – which SUCK! But slowly and surely, all my projects are developing.
And I’m getting the beginnings of a rush of adrenaline as it all works. I have to say, my motto in life really is

‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’
It’s just that sometimes it takes a while to ‘recognize’ what your fears really are.

Take care all!

Thursday Writing Tip – Simple English

March 24, 2011 by Nicole 8 Comments

And no I’m not referring to ‘simple’ as in for those who speak English as a second language, but keeping that in mind may help you.
What I’m talking about is sentences that describe/tell/explain your story in a way that’s succinct and to the point.  Without excessive flowery language or those often overused adverbs.  There is no right or wrong way, really, just keep it simple.  Remember you don’t need to fully describe something to a reader immediately.  Just mention single points as you go along.  For example if I was to describe my appearance I could say, “A female in her mid to late twenties with mid length dark red hair”.
Now there’s nothing wrong with that sentence at all, but I could have just said, “A woman with red hair” and then as I continue in my writing, mention other descriptions.  If I felt the need.  Often we as writers get so involved in intense descriptions to make sure the reader can place themselves that we forget how easily a simple sentence can place us.  Here’s another example
“The blustery wind wrenched at her coat as she hurried down the main road, its icy fingers clawed at her collar and she quickly did her top button up”
“The wind was icy and she fastened her coat’s top button as she walked.”
Again neither of these are right or wrong but the simple sentence does still get the same point across.  What are your thoughts?  Any favorite examples?

Take care all!

A dead simple tip

March 17, 2011 by Nicole 14 Comments

That for some reason we need to be reminded of occasionally.

You don’t HAVE to do ANYTHING in any certain order.  The world will not end because you chose to write your ending first.  Or because you chose to write all the bedroom scenes first (why would you do this?? Not judging.. just curious..) or because you wrote all the action scenes prior to everything else.  Yes it would be really nice to write the whole story in a simple straight line method but seriously as demented as you obviously are for even considering writing as a sane enjoyable hobby – why are you worrying!?! In the long run you’ll re-write the majority of it so STOP STRESSING and just get the damn thing written.

I DON’T WANT TO WRITE THE BORING BITS, I DON’T WANNA, I DON’T WANNA!!

….and yes.. that was mainly for my benefit…

Take care all!
