Dogs.
I keep trying to tell myself they’re cheaper than kids but Otis seems determined to prove me wrong.
We got him back from Massey (as you know) a couple of weeks ago and he thought he was brand new again. We’ve just completed two weeks of monster antibiotics to make sure all the infection is gone and he’s bouncing around as happy as a puppy.
Until Glenn got home…
I’d rung to see how his day was etc etc and as he was chatting to me he suddenly said, “weird! Why is Otis’s head wet?”
Then
“Oh shit his head is covered in blood!”
Cue major panics as he calls out Sable and checks her over, she’s fine not a scratch on her but Otis has been given a decent hiding by the looks of it. I make a frantic call to the vet and Glenn races him over the hill to be patched up.
After some conversing with our neighbours we discover the full story (or at least what we surmise based on the evidence at hand ; p).
Our neighbours own a bullmastiff/boxer cross. A beautiful dog who just wants cuddles, essentially a giant version of Otis. We had hoped when we moved in that the two would get along but on sight of this giant dog Otis promptly developed small dog syndrome *sigh*.
We had to add additions to all the fences because otherwise he would climb to the top (staffy’s are awesome climbers) and yell at big dog. Big dog however just has to stand on his hind-legs and he can peer over the fence.
This infuriates Otis..
So what appears to have happened is that big dog has been staring over the fence at Otis. Otis’s brain has promptly gone to that of an enraged terrier and he has found a spot to climb on the fence (now fixed) and climbed up to scream at big dog. Probably something like ‘nah nah nah nah I’m the King of the Castle’ and then whoops! Fallen over the fence.
A pretty intense squabble has taken place during which time Otis has realized he isn’t as big and tough as he thought he was and he’s had to do a mad leap/scramble back over the fence in retreat.
No stitches were required and he’s back on antibiotics for 5 days and thankfully big dog only has a couple a puncture wounds. The neighbours were lovely about it so we’ll be dropping a ‘sorry/thank you’ gift over on the weekend. And into the vets to pay another bill… *sigh*
Here’s a picture of the wounded puppy feeling very sorry for himself – doesn’t pay to bully!!!
